Thanks for all the questions and suggestions regarding Mobile Registry
Editor, it's nice to see that MRE users have a healthy dose of curiosity. To
date I've tried to answer questions individually but with all the work
piling up at my day job (yeah I have one) I haven't been able to email
everyone back. Going forward I'll try to address the questions I get
most often here.
How does MRE "work"? Ya ya I know it connects to my device but how?
MRE works by "talking" to your device over what is known as the Remote
Application Programming Interface. RAPI is installed with ActiveSync
and its purpose is to allow desktop applications to communicate with a
Smartphone or Pocket PC. Developers love it because it's great for lots
of things, like accessing the registry. ActiveSync uses it extensively, as do many other
applications, including MRE. It also happens to be what allows you to
access the files and folders on your PDA from the comfort of your PC.
Why do I get "Access Denied" errors on my Smartphone (C500, E200 etc...) WHY?!
On Smartphones (soon PPC as well) there is a specific security policy
that can be used to control how RAPI works (see above for what RAPI
is). This policy is what carriers use to allow, prevent or restrict
access to certain remote functions. For example, Orange in part uses it
to restrict remote access to the HKLM and HKUSR registry hives. So
because some telecoms restrict or block RAPI, MRE can't by default work
with all phones. This sucks but thankfully there are
workarounds.
I get "Access Denied". How do I get around this?
After scouring forums and enlisting the help of some brave MRE users
(who were willing to try any screwy method I threw their way) I've
found that there are more than a few ways to make money in World of
Warcraft fix the "Access Denied" issues. The whole process is rather
confusing and to be honest I was still confused until I started writing
it down here. Which means this is truly confusing or I'm just thick
headed. Sadly I think it might be the latter. ;)
Words of caution. If after trying any of these applications your
phone explodes, causes you to hear voices, or turns you into a conservative republican, don't blame me!
All the usual free software disclaimers apply. Use at your own risk,
your results may vary, NATURALLY CARB FREE.
RapiConfig.exe:
RapiConfig is a tool provided by Microsoft and is included as part of
the Windows Mobile SDK. It is a desktop application whose purpose is to
remotely send configuration changes to a Smartphone or PPC (using
ActiveSync and RAPI). It has helped 3 people so far, all of which had a
C500 or E200.
* This *only* tries to enable RAPI nothing else.
* Make sure you have ActiveSync installed and your phone connected via USB or serial port.
* Download EnableRAPI.zip
* Unzip the file
* Double click "EnableRAPI.bat"
* You will see a message indicating that it worked or failed.
AEConfig.exe:
Behind the scenes AEConfig works exactly like RapiConfig, that is, by
sending configuration changes to your device. However, rather running
on your desktop it's necessary to copy it and run it on your
Smartphone. In my experience this has worked for about 10-15 people so
far.
If you're using an Orange SPV C500, C550, E100 or E200 you should have
no problem running this app. It's digitally signed with an Orange
certificate which means it has permission to do what it wants with your
phone, in this case totally unlock it (right click AEConfig.exe ->
properties -> digital signature)
* This tries to completely unlock your phone. Including unblocking RAPI and removing application certification.
* Make sure you have ActiveSync installed and your phone connected via USB or serial port.
* Download AeConfig.zip
* Unzip the file
* Copy the "Disable Security" shortcut in "Storage\Windows\Start Menu"
* Copy "AEConfig.exe" and "DisableSecurity.xml" in the "Temp" folder
* Now on your Smartphone run "disable security" from your phones start menu
* You should be prompted that it worked (might take a bit)
Unlocking Websites:
E100, E200, C500/C550 and MPX 200 owners can also try to disable
security over the air. From the looks of
it, it only removes application certification (app locking) and I don't
think it will necessarily make MRE work. If anyone tries it let me know.
http://www.coolsmartphone.com/app-cert.htm has some more information on the MiTAC, MPX 200 and Mpx220.
If you're still out of luck there are websites that attack the problem
from a different angle. Most work by updating the ROM on your phone.
I've read more than one forum post about someone's phone being hosed as
a result. Sounds like over kill to me. Kind of like using a sledge
hammer on a 2" nail. Risk takers can check out sites like www.UnlockThatMobile.com or Google it.

Franco, sorry for the late reply I've been on vacation. Can you tell me what phone you were trying to run AEconfig on? The application is digitally signed but only with an Orange certificate.
If you have an Orange phone and AEConfig still doesn't work you can try disabling security over the air (link in 3rd section). Then try running AEConfig again. |

Hey guys, I think I have a fix for the "Access Denied" error that will work for you; Neither RapiConfig nor AEConfig worked for me, which is odd, since AEConfig worked for nOrbX187, and he has an XV6700 like me... but the following is what worked for me...
All I had to do was change the two following policy-related registry entries from the WM device, using a WM Registry Editor. I got the registry entries from http://blogs.conchango.com/stuartpreston/archive/2005/11/10/2376.aspx, and the registry editor from Handando (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=2A897EC75DF2X7B899D8BCBAC87A9CBX&platformId=2&N=96806&Ntt=registry&productId=160555&R=160555). You can use the trial, but for $5, it seems worth it to pay the developer for having this little lightweight tool, in addition to our favorite "Mobile Registry Editor". ;)
Navigate to HKLMSecurityPoliciesPolicies Click "Values" soft-key Change "00001001" value to 1 (decimal) (recovery note: default is 2) Change "00001005" value to 40 (decimal) (recovery note: default is 16) Reboot device.
Let me know if you have questions, by emailing mrcarper_delete_this_part@seanet.com. |

On my 8500 reflashed to an i-Mate Smartflip, I had to jump through every one of the hoops mentioned here - install the signed regeditor (http://wiki.spv-developers.com/index.php/HTC_Application_Unlock_Guide), manually app-unlock the phone, install the security policies-changing CAB (http://www.sems.org/entry.asp?ENTRY_ID=157), install the MS SCM, and reprovision with a reduced security profile... but it finally did work. Great tool and a great site. I have managed to get this to work with a Lobster 700 TV with a bit of tweaking.
You need to run SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab
(I got it from here http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=248560)
And then install the developer certificates in SdkCerts.cab
Then use the EnableRAPI.zip as mentioned above and all is sweetness

Now you can edit other registry keys. |

Good luck to all, and thx for the solution :D

I just wanted to confirm that AEConfig.exe worked perfectly and just as you described above to "unlock" and unblock RAPI on my Motorola Q (Verizon; Windows Mobile 5.0; Motorola Software Update 1/5/2006). Once RAPI was unblocked, your MRE (V1.1) program worked flawlessly and allowed me modify the registry, without seeing the dreaded "Access Denied" error message!
Seems like a lot of effort just to change the camera shutter sound on my Moto Q; but who knows what other bugs -- er, um, I mean "features" -- your registry editor will let me work around. Thank you! |

I tried 2 of the methods above but couldn't get them to work. Its not a smart phone, its a PDA I'm using. A Symbol MC70. Cant seem to get it to work, getting Access Denied Errors. Any thoughts? |

I have a Verizon XV6700 with Windows Mobile 5, I downloaded Google Mobile maps and it wouldn't see my Garmin Mobile 10 GPS receiver. I searched the web and found a registry change to fix the problem. I download your program MobileRegistryEditor.exe and I got "Access is denied" message. I downloaded your program AEConfig.exe and followed your instructions. I'm happy to say that now Google moblie map is linked to my GPS receiver. Thanks for your programs!!!! |

Just unlocked an i-mate JasJar (which should have been unlocked already).
This is correct. And it's all you need to do. Navigate to HKLMSecurityPoliciesPolicies Click "Values" soft-key Change "00001001" value to 1 (decimal) (recovery note: default is 2)
This is wrong. Change "00001005" value to 40 (decimal) (recovery note: default is 16) MS says this is the policy for unsigned CAB files. Changing it to decimal 40 seems to mean MANAGER+ENTERPRISE security roles. Leaving it as 16 is USER_AUTH, which is just fine. |

Simon / Salil,
Could either of you tell me exactly how you got it to work? I have a Cingular Blackjack as well and even after running RapiConfig I am unable to access the registry.
Am I doing something wrong? |

Hi, great registry editor. Unfortunately still trying to get past the access denied when i try to change somethings. I have a jaq3 which i updated to wm6. It works really well but funnily the battery icon on the taskbar stays the same no matter how the battery is unless i plug in and remove the usb or else. If i go to power settings it shows the real state of the battery no problem. I have been looking at the registry to see what the problem is and found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEDriversBuiltInBattery PollInterval 4294967295 and think maybe the pollinterval is too high. Unfortunately i cant change it till i get access, rapi did not work. Anyway if anyone can help me sort this out it would be great as i am not really sure what i am doing but it is annoying thinking your battery is full when its not and checking it all the time sucks. thanks |

Let me first of all express my gratitude for the wonderful work you have done in enabling me to be able to sync my O2 Xda Exec with my office laptop that runs the sygate security firewall through the use of the AEConfig utility which made possible the editing of the registry. However, i noticed a slight change in the behaviour of my PDA. Prior to the registry change, i could connect to the internet using Activesync through my home desktop internet connection and my office LAN network respectively. somehow that ability seemed to have been lost.Would you know what i need to do to have this restored?Any registry key changes? |
